Lily Allen, (full name: Lily Rose Beatrice Allen) was born in London, England in the year 1982, 2nd of May. She is a British pop singer and songwriter, born to parents: Keith Allen, the British comedian, and Alison Owen, a British film producer. She is known for her hit song Smile and for being having multiple nominations for her music.
Allen's childhood may be considered a lonely one. She had to attend more than ten schools and was not able to make lasting friendships. Because of this, she decided to spend her time listening to music, enjoying different songs e.g. T.Rex Songs, Happy Mondays songs, etc. When she turned fifteen, she decided to leave school due to her rebellious nature.
Lily tried finding labels to sign her, but was met with many rejections. In 2002, she utilized her father's connections and had a deal with London Records which was still under Warner Music during that time. She was not able to release an album there, however, because she left the label when the person responsible for signing her also left.
In 2004, she started writing songs and was introduced to Future Cut whom she worked with , and after a year, she signed a contract with Regal Records, and she was given 25,000 to start producing her album. There was, however, a lack of support from the label because of their business with releasing tracks for Cold Play and the Gorillaz.
What Lily Allen did, was to post her demos on her MySpace account over the Internet in November of the same year (2005). Her single: LDN attracted thousands and thousands of online listeners, leading to her records' great sales online. This was noticed by the Observer Music Monthly magazine (OMM), and so, Allen was featured in their magazine, even becoming the cover story. This led to Regal Records allowing Allen to have more control over her album. She chose Mark Ronson and Greg Kurstin to work with her as producers.
Allen's debut album entitled Alright, Still received a number of nominations such as the Best British Album(BRIT Awards 2006), and Best Alternative Music Album (Grammy Awards 2008). Lily Allen was also nominated as Best New Artist at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2007. Her sophomore album entitled It's Not Me, It's You has just been released successfully last February (2009) in the UK and the United States. |
